The first module of the project ends with a fruitful studying phase

The Interreg MED BLUEISLANDS partnership has successfully finalised module 1 of the project, the studying phase. Through the implementation of the studying phase’s activities of the project several innovative and important outputs have been produced both on scientific as well as on the administrative/executive level. Seasonality of waste generation due to the variation of touristic visits has been measured, analysed and compared among the participating regions, through sampling and collection of data on the spot in seaside areas. Coastal resources and users have been mapped and a Waste Characterisation Study was elaborated for all participating regions. These results have contributed to the preparation of a state-of-the-art report on the topic. In addition, based on the report "Overview on the impact of tourism on wastewater production, services and management", an electronic tool was developed encompassing various action plans, including partner special characteristics and needs. Based on the tool, the follow-up activities have been designed in regards to reducing and managing wastewater production taking into consideration tourism seasonality, as well as concerning the reduction of micro-plastics and marine-litter production in selected beaches taking into consideration tourism seasonality.

The project has now entered in the implementation of module 2 which consits of two main Working Packages (WP): WP4, which includes ‘testing’ activities for the evaluation of the module 1’s results, and WP5, which concerns activities aiming to ‘transfer’ and further exploit the results produced through the studying phase.

WP4 includes pilot actions in  selected coastal areas of all partner regions and their assessment, evaluation and simulation. It aims to evaluate the effectiveness of action plans produced through the electronic tool mentioned above, in relation to anthropogenic nutrients and marine litter. WP5 includes capacity building, networking and impact analysis activities that will result in a development and production of an innovative online tool for decision makers. This tool will allow to analyse the available information about seasonal waste characteristics and production in selected coastal areas as well as produce recommendations for actions and for the introduction of new policies for decision makers in order to support them in waste management and tackling waste production.
