The conference is organized by the SEARICA Intergroup at the European Parliament, on January 10, with the participation of the Commissioner for the Environment and Maritime Affairs, Karmenu Vella.
The Seas, Rivers, Islands and Coastal Areas Intergroup of the European Parliament fully endorses the statement of the Our Ocean Conference that “all of us depend on the ocean: for our water, our food, our climate and our air”. Human action has indeed left oceans “heavily affected by pollution, overexploitation, coastal degradation and global warming. This has severe consequences for all.”
The Our Ocean Conference held in Malta on 5-6 October 2017, offered an opportunity to showcase commitments illustrating the leading role Europe plays in achieving maritime sustainable development.
The SEARICA Intergroup do believe that a new vision is needed, along with strong and action-oriented commitments.
Therefore, the Seas, Rivers, Islands and Coastal Areas Intergroup of the European Parliament is organising a post OOC17 conference, to present the results of the OOC17 while reflecting upon the potential next steps for action.
