The campaign “Raising Environmental Awareness”, implemented by the waste management body DEDISA, started in 2005 in the Region of Crete. Through a continuous and good cooperation between the Region of Crete and DEDISA, an integrated technical, economic and environmental solution has been developed for the management of waste. The advanced body has focused on raising young people's awareness. With a powerful campaign, DEDISA has established a long lasting educational program for students. Among its activities, the organisation regularly visits schools of different levels to keep a constant dialogue with pupils.

The main objectives of the campaign are:

  1. Raising awareness and providing information about current environmental challenges
  2. Enriching knowledge about climate change as well as environmental issues caused by inefficient waste management
  3. Motivating active participation to preserve and improve the environment focusing on the recycling of packaging, batteries and electrical-electronic devices
  4. Developing skills to recognize and address environmental challenges

DEDISA play a key role in introducing an environmentally-friendly way of living during these formative years for children. With this campaign, youths in Crete, and by extent the general public, are motivated to adopt sustainable practices in their own lives.

During the summer season, the Environmental Awareness Program continues with visits to children's summer camps and active participation in summer programs for children held by municipalities and local sports clubs.

This campaign is a successful example of an awareness raising campaign implemented on a Mediterranean island. By targeting young people, it ensures the long-lasting effect and training of future citizens.
